      IRA Retirement Assets

Dr. Agatha Huepenbecker Burnet grew up in a time when loyalty, commitment and dedication were a natural part of a career plan.  So now, Dr. Burnet didn't think twice about giving back to the institution she believes gave her so much.  "Everything I have is a result of Iowa State, so it is only right to give back," says Agatha.

Dr. Burnet received her M.S. in Textiles and Clothing from Iowa State University in 1956 and her Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1969.  As a recipient of fellowships during both her masters and Ph.D. studies, Dr. Burnet understands the importance of assistance for graduate students as they obtain their education.

During her 37 years a faculty member at Iowa State, Dr. Burnet fostered the growth and development of the Historic Textiles and Costume Collection, assisted in the formation of the Iowa Textile and Apparel Association, and established a doctoral program in the department that gained national and international recognition for the college.

Today and in the future, Dr. Burnet continues to give to Iowa State University and the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.  By designating the ISU Foundation as the beneficiary of her TIAA/CREF retirement plan, Dr. Burnet has made provisions to establish the Agatha Huepenbecker Burnet Graduate Assistantship Endowment.  Dr. Burnet felt it was important to plan the distribution of her estate so the assets she has accumulated will benefit the area she most wants to support.  Her thoughtful planning also will help reduce her estate tax liability.

"This gift will help graduate students, as well as the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, by giving recipients an opportunity to work with, learn from, and improve the textiles and clothing collection," says Agatha.

"I was a child of the depression.  My parents gave me everything by giving me a college education," Agatha says.  "I hope that by providing for others, the spirit of giving and service will continue and grow through them."

Did you know that nearly half your retirement plan assets can be eaten away by taxes at your death?  By naming the ISU Foundation as the beneficiary of your IRA or retirement plan, you can preserve more of your estate for the people and organizations that matter most in your life.
